NC Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Community Honored as National Pacesetter

Voiced by Amazon Polly

The winners are in! The National Campaign for Grade-Level Reading has recognized WAKE Up and Read as a 2022-2023 Pacesetter for its exceptional work in supporting a child’s early literacy success. WAKE Up and Read is a community organization that participates in the NC Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

WAKE Up and Read has been awarded for two programs:

  • WakeTogether is a one-on-one and small group tutoring program supported by trained volunteers. Approximately 33% of participating students met the 2022-2023 end-of-year benchmarks for oral reading fluency. In addition, the students’ reading growth rate far exceeded that of second to fifth grade students overall. African American/Black and Latino/Hispanic students demonstrated the greatest growth in meeting benchmarks for fluency.  Read more about Wake Together.
  • Reaching Families, Raising Readers is a two-year project to improve literacy outcomes for children from birth to 12 years old. The project has focused on increasing access to book ownership and supporting families by connecting them to literacy programs, services, and resources. It is geographically targeted to reach children and families in households likely to have low percentages of book ownership. From creating and maintaining Little Libraries and enrolling more children in the free, evidence-based Ready4K texting program to book distribution, WAKE Up and Read has racked up more than 4,500 volunteer hours.

Congratulations to WAKE Up and Read and all its volunteers for a job well done!
