Celebrating Success: Pathways to Grade-Level Reading Toolkit

July 8, 2024

We’re thrilled to announce the wrap-up of a monumental project: Pathways to Grade-Level Reading Five-Part Toolkit. This initiative has been a beacon of hope, aiming to ensure that every child in North Carolina, regardless of background, has the opportunity to read proficiently by the end of third grade. But it’s more than just reading; it’s about setting up our children for a lifetime of success.

So, what exactly is Pathways to Grade-Level Reading? It’s a comprehensive initiative driven by an ambitious vision. Through the Data Dashboard, Action Map, and insightful publications, Pathways aims to advance actionable strategies with a deliberate focus on advancing racial equity. Pathways partners can use these resources to guide collaborative efforts, leveraging data-driven insights and targeted policies to ensure that all children in North Carolina have the support they need to thrive academically and beyond.

We’ve broken down the journey into five powerful toolkits, each designed to address critical aspects of childhood development and education:

Toolkit Part 1: Empowering Families – This toolkit is all about empowering families to advocate for their children. From culturally relevant assessments to professional development for teachers, every aspect is geared towards supporting families in their crucial role in their child’s education journey.

Toolkit Part 2: Diverse Educator Recruitment and Support – Representation matters. Part 2 focuses on recruiting and then retaining educators and school leaders from diverse backgrounds. Ensuring a diverse teaching workforce creates environments where all children feel seen, valued, and understood.

Toolkit Part 3: Holistic Support – From family-friendly employment policies to accessible transportation and wraparound services, this toolkit addresses the holistic needs of children and families. Because education doesn’t happen in isolation—it’s interconnected with every aspect of a child’s life.

Toolkit Part 4: Mental Health Matters – Mental health is as important as physical health. Part 4 tackles barriers in mental health services, from insurance coverage to professional development for clinicians. Integrating mental health support into primary care practices ensures every child gets the support they need.

Toolkit Part 5: Medicaid-Driven Interventions – Leveraging Medicaid as a backbone service for children and families is a powerful tool for change. Part 5 focuses on using data to track community needs, screening for social determinants of health, and investing in interventions that reach children and their families. It’s about taking a proactive approach to addressing challenges before they become barriers to success.

As we celebrate the conclusion of this project, we invite you to explore these toolkits. Whether you’re a policymaker, community leader, educator, or parent, there’s something valuable for you.
