Read to Rise

Down East Partnership for Children (DEPC) staff provide support to elementary schools to identify school needs, strengthen family engagement, and connect schools to resources to help meet the needs of all children and families. Coaching/technical support is provided to build leadership and capacity to support the principles needed to launch every child as a healthy, lifelong learner by the end of grade 3. Regarding school readiness, The Transition Alignment Committee coordinates transition strategies across both school systems and childcare settings to provide children and families with a seamless transition into Kindergarten. In addition, the summer feeding/summer learning network received technical assistance, planning support and learning materials to support sites in providing learning opportunities during the summer months.

Racial Equity Lens
  • DEPC’s Strategic Framework includes a priority of closing geographic and racial gaps. This is accomplished through intentionally partnering with agencies that connect with underserved populations, such as churches in rural communities serving as summer learning sites and providing meals to a predominantly minority housing community.
Community Voice
  • Community members are encouraged to serve on school community teams at targeted elementary schools.
  • Sites in the summer feeding/summer learning network are staffed by volunteers that live in the communities in which they serve.

Next Steps
  • We are continuing to adjust in the Post-COVID norms; are reintroducing strategies in the schools and reconvening partners, while also gathering new baseline data to determine what areas are in need of the most attention since children have gone back to in person learning after losing 2 years of traditional instruction.
