Pathways Recommendation

Create professional development opportunities for birth-through-third grade teachers, and for child care center directors and principals, to learn together.

Pathways Action Map > Expectation 3: Education Action 3.15: Create Collaborative Birth-through-Third Grade Professional Development

Why This Matters

Investing in collaborative professional development across K-3 teachers and principals, childcare and preschool directors, and early learning educators encourages improved transitions for children and families, and shared learning across the birth-through-eight system. For child care center directors and elementary school principals, research demonstrates that level of formal education and knowledge of child development impact their students’ early literacy.1  A recent survey of elementary school principals found that, even though half of respondents had Pre-K classrooms in their schools, only one in five felt they were well-trained in child development and instructional methods relevant for early education.
