Action 4.4

Create a Mental Health Professional Development System

Pathways Recommendation

Create a broad, connected, trauma-informed mental health professional development system with individualized professional development plans.

Why This Matters

Professional development for mental health clinicians in North Carolina is largely piecemeal, with no overarching system. Effective professional development systems are interconnected and research-informed, incorporating areas such as knowledge building, active learning, coaching, feedback, reflective supervision, and training on models of effective practice.1, 2, A coordinated system will help to improve recruitment and retention of providers and quality of care for young children and families.
