Pathways Recommendation

Adopt research-based standards that connect to diverse cultures (are culturally relevant) to help birth-through-age-eight educators know what skills they need to effectively teach students of color, honor the customs, norms and traditions of all students, and include the diverse views and histories of communities of color within the curriculum.

Pathways Action Map > Expectation 3: Education Action 3.7: Adopt Research-Based Standards for Culturally-Relevant Teaching

Why This Matters

Educational standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Adopting research-based standards that support culturally relevant teaching benefits all students. Culturally-relevant teaching includes students’ cultural references in all aspects of learning and prepares teachers to effectively teach in an increasingly diverse classroom. Culturally-relevant standards and teaching can help K-3 students strengthen their sense of identity, learn cultural competence, and support their academic success.1
