Early Childhood Data Advisory Council Meeting

Initiative:

The NC Early Childhood Data Advisory Council met virtually on August 27. Members received updates on relevant early childhood data and policy initiatives, including:

  • Preschool Development Grant (PDG)
  • Early Childhood Integrated Data System (ECIDS)
  • Educational Longitudinal Data System
  • Leandro
  • NC Pre-K
  • NC Early Learning Inventory during COVID-19
  • DPI Office of Early Learning supports during COVID-19
  • Pathways Data Dashboard
  • Using Census micro-data to improve National Survey of Children’s Health data estimates

Council members received an overview of the Children’s Social-Emotional Health data workgroup recommendations, which were released in April. The workgroup has recommended a set of measures to better understand young children’s social-emotional health and development at the population level. The recommendation will be used to inform the Pathways to Grade-Level Reading Measures of Success Framework, and the NC Early Childhood Action Plan.

The Council also prioritized two measures to focus on first from the data development strategy they created in 2019. Over the next few months, Council members will work on creating or improving data measures for:

  • Adult Health Insurance
  • Preschool Suspensions and Expulsions

The Early Childhood Data Advisory Council meets quarterly and aims to:

  • Improve quality and scope of early childhood data
  • Advocate for agencies and organizations to align their work around the Pathways and ECAP measures
  • Advocate for and facilitate better data sharing
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and support to ground the state’s early childhood work in data and research
  • Build partnerships with other existing data groups
  • Serve as ambassadors for the ECAP, ECIDs, and the Pathways initiative
