NCECF and PBS North Carolina Team Up to Build Young Readers

September 8, 2026

We’re excited to announce a new partnership between the NC Early Childhood Foundation and PBS North Carolina to expand the reach of Readers Are Built and connect more North Carolina families with trusted, high-quality early literacy resources. The partnership will focus on smart screen time, one of the five Readers Are Built pillars, helping parents and caregivers turn screen time into opportunities for learning, interaction, and connection. Through PBS North Carolina and its children’s brand, Rootle, families can find educational programming that supports the same kinds of skills Readers Are Built encourages every day — reading, talking, singing, playing, and learning together.

The partnership comes at an especially exciting time as PBS North Carolina celebrates the 10th anniversary of Rootle, its 24/7 PBS KIDS channel, which has spent a decade bringing educational programming to children and families across the state. Together, NCECF and PBS North Carolina will use their statewide reach, digital platforms, community connections, and trusted resources to help even more families discover simple ways to support early literacy from birth through age 8. It’s another way we’re showing that building a reader can happen almost anywhere — including while enjoying a favorite PBS KIDS program together.
