Over the summer, children can lose some of what they learned during the school year,  and it can add up over their academic career.  Learning throughout the summer can help alleviate learning loss – that’s why we created the Summer Learning Toolkit.

One of our NC CGLR communities  – Read Wayne – shared a special message from Donna Phillips, Director of the Wayne County Library. Congratulations to Donna for recently being honored with the 2024 Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, North Carolina’s highest volunteer honor. Summer learning can happen everywhere and Donna reminds us to get outside and experience the wonders of nature.

Community organizations across our state  provide great summer programs, ensuring that kids have access to books for keeps, and providing tutoring support over the summer – and they’re integrating the Toolkit into their work NCECF leads the NC Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (NC CGLR), where communities are working in neighborhoods, schools, churches, libraries, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, barber shops, hair salons, and more.  They are hosting summer reading stations, reading challenges, book block parties, and snow cone reading parties.  Thousands of books are getting into the hands of children, and thousands of kids are receiving tutoring so they are ready for the next school year.

Call to Action: National Summer Learning Week – July 15-19, 2024

National Summer Learning Week is a great time to educate, inspire, and involve communities in volunteering to help children keep learning throughout the summer.  We’ve created a proclamation for mayors, city councilors, county commissioners, county managers, school district superintendents, and other community leaders to champion and declare July 15-19, 2024 Summer Learning Week. You will find the proclamation when you  download the Summer Learning Toolkit.

NC Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

Since 2015, the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation has served as the state lead for the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading in North Carolina. The national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading has mobilized 300 communities across the country to ensure that more children from low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. It is a collaborative effort by foundations, non-profit organizations, business leaders and government agencies supporting children’s school readiness, summer learning and regular school attendance.

NC CGLR has a vision where diverse and inclusive communities grow thriving readers, beginning at birth and continuing through third grade, so each child is prepared for success. Thirteen community collaboratives currently participate in the NC Campaign.

In 2018, we partnered with Book Harvest to create a Parent Action Team to deepen engagement with parents of the children they serve. Parents helped develop the materials and recommended outreach opportunities for Durham parents to support their children’s summer learning. From this work in Durham, we created our first Summer Learning Toolkit in both English and Spanish. Our 2024 Summer Learning Toolkit is ready for communities to share and encourage summer reading.
