Implementing the Science of Reading Educator Fellowship

We’re excited to announce the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation’s Implementing the Science of Reading Educator Fellowship for the 2023-24 academic year.  

This Fellowship is an opportunity to join a small cadre of eight highly experienced early elementary school teachers who love teaching reading and care deeply about the future of literacy instruction. 

  • Gain and share knowledge for putting the Science of Reading into practice 

  • Learn from literacy experts and engage in collective professional development 

  • Extend your professional teaching network 

  • Infuse the “voice of the teacher“ into policy discussions regarding implementing the Science of Reading by contributing to blogs and podcasts 

  • Receive a small stipend of $2,000, upon completion of fellowship commitments 

The fellowship will begin with a kickoff meeting on August 15th, 2023. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • An educator in a North Carolina school

  • Have at least five years of teaching experiences

  • Have a strong knowledge of research-based literacy instruction and knowledge of or deep interest in teaching based on the principles of the Science of Reading 

  • Be willing to share teaching expertise and insights to positively engage with peers

  • Available to join the August 15th kickoff meeting, to be held on Zoom

Fellowship Commitment:

  • Join a bi-weekly Zoom meeting. The meeting time will be set based on participants’ availability 

  • Contribute to the collective implementing the Science of Reading blog that will be shared with educators across the state

  • Participate in a May 2024 showcase to share learnings  

Brief Fellowship Application:

  • Statement of how this fellowship connects with your career development and the needs of the students you serve 

  • Response to the following prompt: What challenges have you experienced and what do you need to learn about implementing literacy instruction based on the Science of Reading?

  • Copy of your resume

  • Brief letter of support from your principal or district supervisor
