The program will highlight the revenue loss to working parents, employers and the economy due to inadequate and inequitable access to quality, affordable child care in NC.
In December, NCECF released a report that details NC parents’ experiences, needs and preferences for child care before and mid-COVID-19. The survey and the subsequent economic analysis uncovers that:
- Pre-pandemic, North Carolina families, businesses and the economy were already losing $2.4 billion annually due to insufficient affordable, high quality child care.
- Mid-pandemic, the annual losses due to inadequate child care are now approaching $2.9 billion a year—and likely still climbing.
The webinar will feature:
- An introduction by Muffy Grant, Executive Director of the NC Early Childhood Foundation.
- Author of the report, Dr. Clive Belfield, Professor of Economics, Queens College, City University of New York and Principal Economist, Center for Benefit-Cost Studies in Education, Teachers College, Columbia University
- Dr. Sherika Hill, Research & Policy Liaison at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at UNC Chapel Hill and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University, who will highlight the report’s findings on racial and geographic inequities.
- Dr. Sandra Soliday Hong, Research Scientist at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at UNC Chapel Hill, who will discuss best practice in a reimagined equitable early care and education system.
- Kit Cramer, CEO of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, will moderate the conversation.
