Choosing the Most Promising Early Literacy Interventions

How do you determine which early literacy programs and practices can best improve outcomes for young children? If you’re Munro Richardson, you spend more than 1,000 hours reviewing the research!

Munro Richardson, Executive Director of Read Charlotte, is tasked with a bold goal – doubling the number of children reading at grade-level by third grade in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. He has focused his work on advancing the most promising literacy interventions for children beginning at birth. He discovered much of what he wanted and needed to know was not readily available. As a result, he and his team spent more than 1,000 hours reviewing hundreds of studies and determined:

1. Eight research-based birth through eight early literacy indicators
2. Five “buckets” of proven practices
3. A reading success pathway beginning at birth
4. A set of early literacy interventions (practices and programs) that when implemented with fidelity produce the largest results

Munro shared the indicators and which early literacy interventions hold the most promise for improving outcomes for children on a webinar on February 22, 2018.
