Governors Release Early Education Principles

As the federal government considers proposals to advance early childhood education, the National Governors Association released guiding principles to ensure a strong state-federal partnership.

The principles focus on the role of states in developing high-quality early education systems, including governors taking the lead role in a state-federal early education partnership, the federal government providing states maximum flexibility in implementing programs, the recognition of existing state investment in early childhood education by the federal government and support for states to pursue innovation and build a high-quality early education infrastructure.

The principles emphasize four areas:

  • Governance and coordination;
  • Alignment and flexibility for better results;
  • Recognizing state leadership and investment; and
  • Enhancing current innovation.
